Excerpt from The Eyes of Mona Lisa

Lanea’s great-great-great-grandmother had been vague about the result of looking into 𝘔𝘰𝘯𝘢 𝘓𝘪𝘴𝘢’s eyes except on one point. In the diary, she claimed to have seen a female American president. Now it had happened over 100 years later. Coincidence? An eventuality others could’ve predicted? Or a revelation?
Lanea didn’t know, but she was willing to find out for herself.
When they waited outside the door of the exhibit, Lanea squeezed Seral’s wrist. “I’m sorry this is taking so long. I’m glad you’re with me.”
“Not a big deal. You waited for three hours with me to get Brendon Urie’s autograph after the Panic at the Disco concert.” Seral offered a small grin. “You look nervous. But so what if nothing happens? It’s still an amazing painting. We’re celebrating women and America’s first female president, so it’s not a waste of time.”
That must’ve been what Seral had told herself for the past two and a half hours. “Thanks.”
“What are besties for?” Seral winked.
The employee stationed at the door opened it. “How many?”
“Two,” they responded together.
“Go ahead.”
The room, colder than the rest of the gallery, sent chills over Lanea afresh, raising goosebumps all over her body. There were no windows, but delicate light flooded the space in a warm glow. In opposite corners of the room, two security guards stood at attention. The walls were cream-colored, and three were bare. On the fourth wall, the top of the gold-framed painting hung about six feet off the ground.
“Don’t you want to get closer?” asked Seral.
She did, but Lanea also wanted to savor each moment and explore every angle. With a sidestep, she plowed into a barrel-chested gentleman.
“Sorry.” Embarrassment glowed on her cheeks.
“It’s okay.” He lumbered ahead.
The employee outside the door had admitted about twenty people, most of whom already crowded the painting, blocking the view from Lanea’s position in the back of the room. She’d learned that in the Louvre, thousands of people swarmed the 𝘔𝘰𝘯𝘢 𝘓𝘪𝘴𝘢. Lanea felt grateful for the National Gallery’s high security measures.
Darting forward, she disregarded her former plan to move slowly in search of the magic spot. With 𝘔𝘰𝘯𝘢 𝘓𝘪𝘴𝘢 gazing off to the left, Lanea moved to the right side of the room. In the space between bodies, she regained a full view of the painting about thirty paces away. A clear, bullet-proof glass case framed the poplar panel. Rather than painting on a canvas, Leonardo da Vinci had transformed a hunk of wood into a masterpiece.
Lanea stared into the brown eyes of the portrait, hoping to discover whatever future revelations her G-G-G hadn’t shared—unless those secrets were in the missing, torn out pages, which Lanea had no hope of recovering.
Seconds passed. Nothing happened.
Lanea moved forward, eyes locked on the woman presumed to be Lisa Gherardini. With each step, Lanea waited for a vision, a voice, something showing or telling her the future.
