What Happened 109 Years Ago This Week?

On August 21, 1911

The theft of Leonardo da Vinci's Mona Lisa

On August 21, 1911, a thief walked out of the Louvre Museum with Leonardo da Vinci's Mona Lisa hidden under his smock. At the time, the painting was not even the most famous piece in the Louvre, let alone the world, and it wasn't missed for 24 hours. For two years, police had no leads, but the thief was caught attempting to sell Mona Lisa to a dealer in Florence, Italy. Vincenzo Perrugia was arrested and it's believed he wanted the painting returned to its country of origin.

This year marks the 109th anniversary of the theft of Mona Lisa.
